Is that a goat I see over there? No, don’t worry, it’s just a story from Crump Island’s past. This little slice of paradise off the northeast coast of Antigua was once known as Goat Island. You see, Crump Island wasn’t always its name. The Crump family, who owned an estate at Coconut Hall back in the 18th century, had the honor of lending their name to this beautiful island. Today, Crump Island stands as a testament to Antigua’s dedication to both tourism and environmental preservation. Back in the 1960s, people started to realize just how special this place was. By the 1970s, Crump Island was declared a Wildlife Reserve. Then, in the 1980s, there were big dreams of turning it into the Crump Island Coral Reef Marine Park, complete with an educational trail and a marine aquarium. Imagine that! Sadly, those plans fell through. There were even talks of a massive hotel complex in the late 1990s. Thankfully, due to public outcry, that project was scrapped. Today, Crump Island rests peacefully within the North East Marine Management Area, a safe haven for coastal birds. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the greatest luxury is leaving paradise untouched.
