Dating back to 1849, Crown Street Public School stands as one of Australia’s oldest continually operating schools. It is more than just a school. Crown Street Public School represents a legacy of education and community. Let’s explore its fascinating history.

Crown Street Public School’s story began humbly. In 1863, it operated as Bourke Street National School in a rented building. The Bourke Street Congregational Church owned it. By 1876, the school needed more space. The Council of Education sought a new site. The Deacons of the church also wanted a proper public school for the neighborhood.

In 1877, the Council purchased land on Crown Street. The location was directly behind the rented school building. Temporary wooden structures were erected. In March 1878, the school moved and officially became Crown Street Public School.

The student population exploded. By May 1878, 1035 children were enrolled. By the end of the year that number jumped to 1405. Just one year later the number was 1,608. Overcrowding became a major issue. Some teachers even requested transfers due to the difficult conditions.

A permanent building was essential. In 1879, construction began on a new structure. G. A. Mansfield, the Council of Education architect, designed it. The building was meant for approximately 1,200 students. Mr A. Scott won the tender for masonry and brickwork. Messrs Mackay and Son secured the carpentry and finishing contract. The two-story building opened in May 1880. The temporary buildings were moved to Surry Hills South Public School. It was later renamed Bourke Street Public School.

Even with the new building space was still tight. In 1890, additional classrooms were built on the northern boundary. By 1892, the school had 1,720 pupils.

Crown Street Public School also catered to Jewish students. In 1896, Headmaster Mr. Banks noted that the school had provided Jewish religious instruction for sixteen years. Two Hebrew teachers taught there for an hour each morning. Every Hebrew child received two hours of instruction per week.

Over the years, Crown Street Public School continued to evolve. In 1897, a two-story building with classrooms and weather sheds was added. In 1911, this building became an infants school with eight classrooms. In 1924, the main building was remodeled. A new manual training building was also constructed.

Crown Street Public School offered secondary education from 1881 to 1960. It became a Superior Public School in 1881. From 1913 to 1947, it had a boys commercial secondary department. From 1913 to 1928, there was also a girls domestic science department. From 1929 to 1960, a girls intermediate high school was in operation.

The school’s architecture is notable. The large two-story building features a Gothic Revival style. It has face brick walls on sandstone foundations. Stone dressings adorn the windows, sills, and cornices. A three-story tower with a metal-roofed spire dominates the structure. The steeply pitched roof resembles a mansard roof.

The school also has a cenotaph. It is in the Anzac tradition. It honors former students who served in the war. Stone terraces and steps connect the school to Crown Street.
