Croom Natural Resource Management Area is a haven. It is a place where nature thrives. Here, the whispers of the wind carry tales of winding rivers and towering pines.
Imagine yourself transported to Croom Wildlife Management Area in Florida. It is managed with the Florida Forest Service. The area has more than 20000 acres. This large tract is part of the Withlacoochee State Forest. It stretches along 13 miles of the Withlacoochee River. You’ll also find the serene Silver Lake. Cypress trees and longleaf pines dominate the landscape.
The forest provides diverse activities. There is hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Pack a picnic and enjoy the scenery. Numerous recreational trails crisscross the area. Hike 31 miles of trails. Bicycle along 64 miles. Horseback ride on 43 miles of trails. A paved trail runs through the area. It is the Withlacoochee State Trail.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife. You might spot white-tailed deer and wild turkeys. Watch for fox squirrels. Alligators and swallow-tailed kites also live here. The area offers three boat ramps for canoes and boats. Five camping areas are available.
Remember some rules if you bring your dog. For non-hunting activities keep dogs under physical restraint. Dogs are not allowed in restricted areas. These areas are marked “Closed to Public Access.” Bird dogs are only allowed north of Croom Road. Dogs are prohibited in the Croom Motorcycle Area.
Hunting has specific regulations. No hunting deer or wild hog with dogs. Small game hunting is allowed with certain dog breeds. Dogs can track wounded game on leashes.
