Did you know Cromer was once called Dee Why West? That’s right. This charming suburb of northern Sydney didn’t always bear its current name. Cromer is nestled just 20 kilometers northeast of the bustling Sydney CBD. It’s a tranquil escape within easy reach of the city’s energy. But its story is far from tranquil.

The name Cromer is a tribute to its namesake in Norfolk England. This quiet seaside town inspired the name change. This happened after the Dee Why Golf Links transformed into the Cromer Country Club in 1940. This transition marked a significant turning point for the area. The club successfully petitioned for the area’s renaming in 1964.

Cromer’s history is rich with anecdotes. For instance did you know that a Cromer post office opened in 1959? It served the community for over 30 years before closing in 1992. It’s a testament to the area’s growth and changing postal needs.

Today Cromer boasts a vibrant community. It’s known for its many parks and reserves. These include Cromer Park Truman Reserve and Wambiri Place Reserve. These green spaces host a variety of sports. These range from Rugby League to cricket. The Cromer Golf Club is the centerpiece of the suburb. Its fairways are beautifully interwoven with the Arcus Tributary. This meanders into the picturesque Narrabeen Lagoon.

Interestingly the Dee Why West Recreation Reserve is a popular spot for outdoor activities. It sits between Cromer Heights and Wakehurst Parkway. However this haven of bush walking and trail bike riding has faced development threats. Thankfully the Warringah Council has consistently rejected these plans. They cite both environmental concerns and population considerations.

The 2021 census recorded a population of 8030 people in Cromer. A majority 72.2% are Australian-born. England New Zealand and Italy are the most common countries of origin for the rest. The most common spoken language at home is unsurprisingly English. Italian follows at 1.7%. In terms of religion No Religion Catholic and Anglican faiths are the most prevalent.

Cromer is more than just a collection of houses and parks. It’s a testament to the history of the Northern Beaches region. It’s a suburb that has evolved from its humble beginnings as Dee Why West. Today it offers a unique blend of natural beauty sporting opportunities and a strong sense of community.
