How does a 98-foot-tall Christ feel looking down on Tegucigalpa? That’s the question I ask myself standing here before Cristo Viene. This majestic monument isn’t just a statue. It’s a testament to Honduran faith resilience and artistry.

Cristo Viene stands proudly on El Picacho hill. It dominates the Tegucigalpa skyline. Its imposing figure is visible to sixty percent of the Central District population. This is especially true at night when it is beautifully lit. The idea for Cristo Viene arose during preparations for the Jubilee Year 2000. Archbishop Oscar Andres Rodriguez spearheaded the project. He wanted a monument commemorating Jesus Christ.

A committee formed. They considered two locations. Initially the highest point of El Picacho was selected. This offered breathtaking city views. However it was occupied by a vital water distribution facility. Another hill was considered but its view was too limited. Finally a site was chosen. It was slightly lower down on El Picacho near the United Nations Park. It was an area where an old sundial a Mayan-like symbol once stood.

The project required significant funding. Hondurans government and private entities contributed generously. The sculptor Mario Zamora Alcantara based in Mexico created the design. The construction company Consulcreto led by Engineer Jose Francisco Paredes handled the structural engineering. Architect Luciano Duron designed the surrounding park. Zamora created a giant fiberglass mold in Mexico. This was then transported to El Picacho. The concrete statue was built over seven months by a team of forty people.

The Christ figure itself is 65 feet high. It sits on a 33-foot pedestal. The entire monument weighs 2500 tons. It opened January 16 1997. Cristo Viene is more than a religious symbol. It’s a landmark a source of civic pride. It stands as a symbol of the Honduran people’s faith and perseverance. From here we can reflect on the story behind this iconic figure. As we gaze upon Cristo Viene we also appreciate the stunning views of Tegucigalpa. Its beauty unfolds before us. This view truly is a blessing.
