Ever wonder where Toronto students learn respect for others? It happens right here at Crestwood School. Crestwood School began with a vision in 1979. Dalia Eisen, a teacher, wanted to offer students something better. She felt existing schools weren’t meeting every child’s needs. Dalia also wanted to keep time-tested teaching methods alive. Phonics, grammar, and spelling were important to her.
In September 1980, Crestwood opened. It started small with just seven students. The school was located in an 800-square-foot office space. This was at Eglinton and Bathurst. Dalia took a leap of faith. She believed in her vision.
Five years later, Crestwood grew. Seventy students moved into a Victorian house. This new location was on Prince Arthur Avenue. By 1990, Crestwood had 360 students. These students ranged from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. The school then moved to Bayview and Lawrence.
Parents loved Crestwood School. Teachers got to know their students well. They figured out what each child needed to succeed. Students felt confident and excited about learning. Crestwood balanced innovation with traditional methods. It created a safe and adventurous environment. These qualities remain today.
Parents wanted an upper school. Dalia agreed. In 2001, Vince Pagano became Headmaster. He started Crestwood Preparatory College. It included grades 7 to 12. Vince oversaw the expansion of a new building. It was near York Mills and the Don Valley Parkway. Crestwood Preparatory College opened in September 2001. Today, it has 550 students.
Crestwood Preparatory College is known for academics and sports. Basketball is a primary sport. They also offer hockey, swimming, soccer, curling, and badminton. Crestwood participates in CISAA.
Crestwood strives to balance a child’s physical, social, and emotional growth. Small classes allow personalized attention. Teachers and students communicate effectively. Crestwood Preparatory College is located at 217 Brookbanks Drive. It is a co-ed, private high school. Toronto Lands Corporation owns the property. The Toronto District School Board leases it.
Notable alumni include Emmanuel Zambazis and Aaliyah Edwards. Emmanuel played soccer for Iraklis F.C. and Canada’s under-20 team. Aaliyah plays basketball for the Washington Mystics. She also played for UConn Huskies. She represented Canada at the Olympics.
From humble beginnings, Crestwood School has grown. It continues to provide a nurturing and successful learning environment. Crestwood balances traditional values with modern education. Students thrive in this caring community.
