How did a London pleasure garden end up shaping a Sydney suburb? Welcome to Cremorne Point a harbourside haven with a surprisingly rich past.

Cremorne Point’s name isn’t random. It’s a nod to London’s famous Cremorne Gardens a popular 19th-century pleasure ground. This connection is a surprising detail in the story of this Sydney suburb. The Gaelic origins of the name meaning ‘boundary’ and ‘chieftain’ add another layer of intrigue.

Before European arrival Cremorne Point was known as Wul-warra-Jeung. It was a significant site for the Cammeraygal people. They used the natural sandstone cliffs for shelter fishing and ceremonies. The waters east of the point were called Goram-Bullagong.

In 1820 James Robertson a watchmaker was granted 35 hectares of land here. He built a Georgian house a testament to the area’s early development. His son later became a five-time Premier of New South Wales. Robertson’s house later became the Cremorne Hotel.

The 1850s saw the arrival of the Cremorne Gardens. Inspired by their London namesake these gardens were a hub of activity. Steamers ferried visitors from Circular Quay. The Gardens offered amusements such as a grand dancing stage a German band and fireworks displays. Sadly their popularity waned by 1862.

The 20th century brought further changes. A Harbour Foreshores Vigilance Committee fought to protect the area from industrial development. Cremorne Reserve was established in 1905 securing the area’s future as public land. The area also became known for its beautiful Arts and Crafts architecture.

Today you can still enjoy the stunning harbour views that attracted people for centuries. You can walk the foreshore path marvel at the historic houses and even take a dip in the MacCallum Pool a testament to Cremorne Point’s enduring appeal. Remember as you stroll along the waterfront that this seemingly tranquil spot has been the scene of land grants pleasure gardens and successful community campaigns. It’s a story of land grabs and preservation a unique blend of history and beauty.
