A winged snake. That’s what caught my eye first. See it there above the archway? This is the Cranach-Haus in Weimar. Right here on the market square.

This Renaissance building isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a living testament to a family of artists. Lucas Cranach the Elder and his son lived and worked within these very walls. The house was built between 1547 and 1549 by Nikolaus Gromann for his son-in-law. That’s Lucas Cranach the Elder. Imagine the hustle and bustle of the 16th century. The smells of paint and linseed oil. The sounds of hammers and chisels.

Cranach the Elder established a workshop here. He trained apprentices. He worked in his attic studio until his old age. He even put the finishing touches on a three-winged altarpiece for the parish church. That masterpiece was completed by his son in 1555.

The Cranach-Haus wasn’t always a theatre. Until the late 1990s it was a gallery. Famous international artists like Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Christo and Jeanne-Claude exhibited their works here. Can you picture their artwork adorning these very walls? Their creativity inspiring future generations?

Now the ‘Theater im Gewölbe’ calls this place home. It’s known for its classical pieces. It continues to be a center for artistic expression. Just as it was centuries ago. The Cranach-Haus stands as a symbol of Weimar’s rich history and enduring artistic legacy. A legacy of a winged snake and generations of talent. A legacy that lives on here. In this very house.
