A wisp of music seems to hang in the air right here at the Coreto da Praça Matriz. This isn’t just any bandstand. This is a stage steeped in history. It whispers tales of a bygone era.

The Coreto da Praça Matriz, a charming structure of iron and wood, first emerged in 1909. Its creation was thanks to the Câmara Municipal. The newly formed musical band União da Mocidade, led by maestro Tapajara Pinto, was ready to inaugurate it.

Imagine the excitement on November 7th, 1909. The town gathered. Eager to hear the União da Mocidade. But fate had other plans. An intense rain arrived. The varied program was cut short. The splendid diversão was completely interrupted.

Despite the soggy start, the Coreto became a focal point. It was a stage for countless musical performances. Lively auctions took place here. Passionate political speeches filled the air. This went on until January 1911. Then, the Coreto underwent a renovation.

In March 1912, “O Atibaiense” newspaper announced the Coreto’s grand reopening. It had more than doubled in size. The elegant structure could now comfortably accommodate 30 musicians. There was no feeling of being squeezed.

The concerts faced a temporary suspension. It was due to the lack of a maestro. Dr. Miguel Vairo, the mayor, stepped in. He reassigned funds to expand the Coreto. He made sure the renovation was economical. Maestro Pedro Hilário and the Lyra Atibaiense band gave the opening concert.

Sadly, this beloved Coreto met its end in 1936. It was demolished during a major plaza renovation. Later replacements lacked its history. They couldn’t match its functionality.

From the 1960s onward, coretos and musical bands declined in popularity. New social habits took hold. Today, the Coreto da Praça Matriz remains. It serves as an aesthetic ornament. Its presence sparks debate. It also ignites passions.

For many, it represents a romanticized vision of the past. It evokes a bucolic Atibaia. It is a town slowly disappearing. It is buried by the relentless advance of progress. But it lives on. It lives on in books. It lives on in stories. Old photographs keep it alive. Most importantly, it resides in the memories of longtime residents.

The Coreto da Praça Matriz stands as a symbol. It is a symbol of community. It is a symbol of artistic expression. It is a reminder of simpler times. Times when music filled the square. Times when neighbors gathered. Times when the Coreto was the heart of the town.
