Five thousand souls. That’s how many people call the Copan Building home. Imagine that a city within a city. This isn’t just a building. It’s a monument to Brazilian ambition. It’s the Copan Building a swirling masterpiece of concrete and curves.

The Copan Building stands proudly in Sao Paulo’s heart. Designed by the legendary Oscar Niemeyer it’s a symbol of modern Brazilian architecture. It’s more than just apartments. It’s a community a microcosm of Brazilian life.

Construction began in 1952 but faced delays. It finally opened its doors in 1966. Niemeyer envisioned a building open to all Brazilians regardless of social class. This is evident in the variety of apartment sizes from small studios to large three-bedroom units. He also planned a park and a rooftop deck. Sadly only the apartments remain. The planned outdoor spaces are now used differently.

The Copan Building is massive. It has 1160 apartments 38 floors and 22 elevators. It’s so large it has its own postal code. That’s more than 2000 residents. Seventy-two shops line its ground floor. There’s a church a bookstore even a few restaurants. All of this activity is inside the Copan.

Originally the Copan Building was meant to be two structures a hotel and residential buildings. Only the residential building was ever completed. Financial issues forced the change in plans.

The building’s name Copan is an acronym. It stands for Companhia Pan-Americana de Hotéis e Turismo. That translates to Pan-American Hotels and Tourism Company.

Today a protective net covers the building. Loose mosaic tiles threatened pedestrians. A major renovation is planned to repair or replace the 72 million tiles. This is a monumental task.

The Copan Building isn’t just a place to live. It has appeared in The Amazing Race. It’s also inspired artists. Regina Rheda even wrote a collection of short stories about the building. It’s a testament to Niemeyer’s visionary design a true landmark of Sao Paulo.
