How about a journey beneath our feet? This is the Connect-Pipeline. It’s not just any pipeline. The Connect-Pipeline plays a vital role in Cologne’s industrial infrastructure.

The Connect-Pipeline links two Shell refineries. These refineries are in Wesseling and Cologne. Shell Deutschland Oil GmbH planned its construction. The goal was to avoid densely populated areas. This ensured minimal disruption during installation and operation.

The Connect-Pipeline stretches about 3.8 kilometers. A significant portion crosses the Rhine River twice. These crossings used a special technique. It’s called microtunneling. This minimizes environmental impact.

Each crossing is impressively long. One measures 1.191 meters. The other spans 1.299 meters. Reinforced concrete pipes encase the pipeline. These pipes have a nominal diameter of 2000 millimeters.

Construction occurred between July 2011 and November 2013. The project cost around 22 million euros. Inside the casing pipe are four different product tubes.

Microtunneling was the chosen method for the Rhine crossings. This involved drilling with reinforced concrete pipes. This technique ensures minimal surface disruption. It also protects the river’s ecosystem.

Imagine the engineering feat. Tunnels bored deep beneath the Rhine. These tunnels safely carry essential resources. The Connect-Pipeline ensures the smooth operation of Shell’s refineries.

Cologne has a long history of innovation. Even the Romans supplied the city with fresh water. They used a long aqueduct from the Eifel region. The Connect-Pipeline continues this tradition of infrastructure.

Cologne’s commitment to progress is clear. The city is always looking forward. It balances industrial needs with environmental concerns.

The Connect-Pipeline stands as a testament. It shows Cologne’s blend of history and modernity. It’s a hidden artery. It keeps the city’s industries flowing.
