Tucked away off Alabama Avenue SE, the Congress Heights Recreation Center might surprise you. It’s one of the smallest recreation centers in Ward 8. Yet, this place buzzes with activity. It’s actually one of DPR’s most popular playgrounds. The Congress Heights Recreation Center is a beloved community hub, despite its compact size. The current building is closed for renovations, a major project aiming to transform this little gem. Imagine a brand new recreation center. This new center will boast a gymnasium, kitchen, a flexible computer lounge, and multipurpose spaces. The surrounding park is also getting a makeover with a new playground and other improvements. This project, slated for completion in the fall of 2025, represents a $36.7 million investment in the Congress Heights community. But even before this grand renovation, the Congress Heights Recreation Center held a special place in the hearts of locals. It offered a variety of outdoor amenities. These included a basketball court, outdoor chess and checker tables, a parksite, a pavilion with a shaded playground, a softball field, and even tennis courts. The Congress Heights Recreation Center might be small, but it’s big on community spirit and fun. This is a testament to the importance of accessible recreational spaces for everyone. It is where kids can play, families can connect, and the community can thrive.
