“Have you ever felt the warmth of a community that transcends borders?” That’s the feeling you get standing before Congregation Har-El. This isn’t just a synagogue; it’s a vibrant tapestry woven from threads of history hope and human connection. Congregation Har-El’s story begins not in a grand building but in the determined hearts of North Shore Jewish residents. Led by Horst Sachs their vision took root mid-20th century. Officially incorporated in 1962 the congregation initially held meetings in homes a testament to their unwavering faith and community spirit.
By 1974 an influx of South African Jews enriched the congregation. They rented space at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Regular services were established under the conservative tradition. Social events further strengthened the bonds. The congregation was then known as Sha’ar Harim Gateway to the mountains. Reaching 100 member families by 1981 was a monumental achievement. They hired Rabbi Imre Balla their guiding light until 1999.
In 1984 Congregation Har-El adopted its current name Mountain of God. It marked a significant shift. They moved into renovated army barracks. This temporary home at 1735 Inglewood served them for 13 years. Their dedication to growth didn’t wane. In 1993 they purchased land at 1305 Taylor Way West Vancouver. Their dream of a permanent home began to take shape.
On September 7 1997 the dedication of the new synagogue was a joyous occasion. The beautiful building designed by Mark Ostry of Acton Johnson Ostry received prestigious awards. These awards celebrated its architectural brilliance. The building houses a sanctuary community center kitchen library meeting rooms and social halls. The North Shore Hebrew School also resides within its walls.
The congregation experienced further growth. Rabbi Shmuel and Sara Birnham and their son joined in 2000. Congregation Har-El joined the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in 2002. Major renovations in 2008 enhanced the sanctuary’s acoustics and ambiance. Cantor Teron Cohen became the congregation’s first full-time cantor in 2010. Congregation Har-El continues to serve as a welcoming home for a diverse community embracing Jewish identity worship education culture and values. This is more than a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and enduring community.
