This is the Congregação Cristã no Brasil in São Paulo. Its story begins in 1910. A time when the Pentecostal movement was just taking root in Brazil. It was founded by the Italian-American missionary Luigi Francescon. His ten missionary journeys through Brazil found particular success among Italian immigrants. The church’s establishment was part of the first wave of the Pentecostal movement in Brazil. Alongside the Assemblies of God. The Congregação Cristã no Brasil is one of the first Pentecostal churches in Brazil.

Francescon’s journey began even earlier. In late 19th-century Chicago. He became involved with the Pentecostal Mission. A group centered around the experience of the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”. This involved speaking in new tongues. Francescon experienced this himself. He saw it as divine confirmation. It shaped his beliefs and future work.

After arriving in Brazil in 1910 Francescon first baptized people in Santo Antônio da Platina Paraná. He then moved to São Paulo. Initially. The believers gathered without a specific denomination. Their gatherings grew. Eventually they purchased their first building. The Congregação Cristã do Brasil was born. Later. The name was changed to the Congregação Cristã no Brasil.

Initially. The church had a largely Italian membership. Over time. it embraced other ethnicities. By 1950 the church had spread throughout Brazil and beyond. In 2010 the Congregação Cristã no Brasil reported 2289634 members in Brazil alone. It was the third-largest Protestant denomination by membership at that time. The church’s growth is a remarkable success story.
