The Christian Congregation in Brazil has humble beginnings. Its roots trace back to Italian immigrants in Chicago in 1904. They gathered seeking divine guidance and adhering to the apostolic faith.
In 1910, Louis Francescon journeyed from Chicago to Brazil. His mission was to spread this spiritual movement. Francescon’s arrival in São Paulo marked a pivotal moment. He ventured to Santo Antonio da Plantina. His missionary trips resonated deeply with fellow Italian immigrants and Brazilians.
The Congregação Cristã no Brasil grew dynamically. By 2016, it boasted around 2.8 million members. In 2021, it had over 24000 temples in Brazil. Worldwide, there are more than 50000 temples.
Here in the metro area of São Paulo the church thrives. There are 500000 followers here. They are spread across 2000 churches. The mother church in the Brás district can house 9800 members.
Francescon’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. He left the First Italian Presbyterian Church of Chicago. His belief in water baptism by immersion set him apart. He embraced doctrines like anointing with oil miracles and Holy Spirit baptism.
The North Avenue Full Gospel Mission played a role. It was led by William Howard Durham. Evangelists from Chicago established churches in Italian colonies. These churches mainly were in the Northeast. Some joined the Christian Church of North America. Others affiliated with the Christian Congregation in the United States.
