“Ever been part of something bigger than yourself?” That’s the question that comes to mind as we stand before the Congregação Cristã no Brasil. It stands as a testament to faith and community. This isn’t just another church. It’s a cornerstone of Pentecostal Christianity in Brazil.

Let’s take a closer look at Congregação Cristã no Brasil. Its story began with Luigi Francescon. He was an Italian-American missionary with a vision. In 1910, Francescon journeyed from Chicago to Brazil. He sought to spread his faith among Italian immigrants and native Brazilians.

The early days of Congregação Cristã no Brasil were humble. The first houses of prayer emerged in Paraná and São Paulo. Santo Antônio da Platina in Paraná was one key location. Another was the Brás neighborhood in São Paulo. The church’s roots are deeply intertwined with Italian heritage and the Pentecostal movement.

Congregação Cristã no Brasil grew steadily. By 2021, it was estimated to be present in 78 countries. The church became one of Brazil’s largest evangelical denominations. In 2010, it boasted 2,289,634 members. By 2019, over 20,000 temples were spread across Brazil.

The church’s origins trace back to Chicago. Luigi Francescon, an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, embraced adult baptism. This led him and others to form a free community. Later, it was named Assemblea Cristiana Italiana di Chicago.

In 1907, Francescon learned about the Pentecostal Mission. It was led by William Durham. This mission was an extension of the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles. Francescon visited the Pentecostal Mission. He felt that the evangelistic work had divine approval. He and his companions attended meetings. Many experienced baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Francescon’s journey to Brazil was transformative. On a train trip, he learned about Votorantim. It was a district with a significant Italian immigrant community. He met Angelo de Ciene and planted the seeds of faith. By 1918, when Francescon returned, a community had formed. The Ribeiro family also embraced the new faith.

The Congregação Cristã no Brasil faced challenges. Persecution from a textile factory forced members to meet outside the village. Despite this, the church grew. In 1931, José Thomaz da Costa was ordained as an elder by Louis Francescon.

The Congregação Cristã no Brasil stands as a beacon of faith. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of its founder. Its influence extends far beyond Brazil. Its story continues to evolve. It reflects a blend of Italian heritage, Pentecostal fervor and unwavering devotion. The seat located in Brás is the fourth largest in the capital with 19.028 m².
