Wow. Look at this majestic building. This is the Confederation Life Building. It’s more than just an office building. It’s a piece of Toronto’s history.

The Confederation Life Building opened in 1893. It was a big deal then. The tallest structure in Toronto. It was designed by Knox Elliot & Jarvis. They won a competition to design this impressive headquarters for the Confederation Life Insurance Company. The building’s design is a mix of Romanesque Revival and Gothic styles. Think massive red sandstone and intricate stone carvings. Dragons lions even grapes and leaves decorate the facade.

The building wasn’t just about looks. It was state-of-the-art for its time. Inside you’d find marble mosaic tiles white oak and even 80 fireproof vaults. There were four elevators a luxury back then. Each room had electric lighting and gas. Even large windows for good ventilation. The top floor boasted a large assembly hall a supper room and a lounge. Not bad for an office building huh?

In 1899 the ground floor was updated. Larger windows were added. This made the building more suitable for the retail center it was in. They even added a prominent corner entrance. The building stood as the Confederation Life headquarters until 1955.

Unfortunately a fire in 1981 caused significant damage. The top floor and roof were destroyed. But because of its historical significance the Confederation Life Building was restored. Today it houses shops restaurants businesses and medical offices. The Confederation Life Building a survivor. A testament to Toronto’s past. A building that stands proudly on Richmond Street East.
