Founded in 1978, Area Science Park has grown significantly. It started as a consortium. The goal was to boost research in Trieste. President Giovanni Leone signed the decree. This established the park’s foundation.
Area Science Park began in Padriciano. It used buildings from a former refugee camp. Early activities focused on scientific and technological research. The park soon sought to host the ICGEB. This is the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. Area Science Park also holds a 51% share in Sincrotrone Trieste. Carlo Rubbia chaired this organization’s creation.
The Basovizza campus opened 10 km from Trieste. This marked expansion. Research centers and companies began setting up there. Activities started at the Elettra synchrotron light laboratory. The machine was named after Guglielmo Marconi’s ship-laboratory.
Area Science Park committed to innovation. It focused on technology transfer from research to business. A legislative decree allowed expansion throughout the region. This highlighted the park’s national importance. The Ministry of Education gained a representative on the Board of Directors.
Area Science Park coordinated research organizations in Friuli Venezia Giulia. This is now known as SiS FVG. The park officially became a National Research Organisation. The Fermi FEL free electron laser began operations. It works with Elettra. An agreement with the National Research Council created an Open Lab Support Structure.
Area Science Park is committed to S&T Platforms. These platforms help public and private operators access research. SiS FVG enhances the scientific and innovation system in Friuli Venezia Giulia. It includes 17 regional organizations. The Autonomous Region of FVG initiated it.
A Genomics and Epigenomics Laboratory launched. It installed the NovaSeq 6000 genomic sequencer. The lab earned certifications for genotyping. Research activities in Data Engineering also launched. The ORFEO Data Center supports genomic research.
Infrastructure projects started under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan PNRR. The PRP@CERIC project studies pathogens. It aims to combat disease outbreaks. NFFA-DI seeks to create a research infrastructure for nanoscience.
Area Science Park offers specialized research. It supports industry with innovation models. It manages and develops the science park. Its initiatives support ecological transition. Today Area Science Park manages Italy’s main science park. About 60 businesses, startups, and research centers reside here. They are in two campuses. These are in Padriciano and Basovizza. The park includes 80000 square meters of equipped facilities. Around 2800 people work here every day.

The Welcome Office Friuli Venezia Giulia helps international students and researchers. EURAXESS Centre Trieste supports researcher career development. It also promotes European research policies.
