Could a simple fishing trip change the destiny of a nation? Here at Comunidade Nossa Senhora Aparecida, that’s exactly what happened. In 1717, three fishermen, Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves, were tasked with catching fish for a grand banquet in Guarantinguetá for the visiting Count of Assumar. The catch was meant for the Count of Assumar, Don Pedro de Almeida, the Governor of the Province of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The fishermen cast their nets into the Paraíba River, but luck seemed to have abandoned them. Hours passed, and their nets remained empty. Finally, João Alves cast his net one last time. He felt a weight, but it wasn’t the familiar tug of fish. It was a statue, a small, headless figure of the Virgin Mary. Casting again, he found the missing head. On their next cast, their nets overflowed with fish. Comunidade Nossa Senhora Aparecida finds its origin in this miraculous event. The fishermen, recognizing the divine intervention, cleaned the statue and brought it to Filipe Pedroso’s home. Word of the miraculous catch and the statue quickly spread. Soon, people from neighboring villages flocked to Pedroso’s home to venerate what they called “Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida,” or Our Lady of the Appeared Conception. The small statue became a beacon of hope. A small chapel was built to house the statue, later replaced by a larger one in 1737. Comunidade Nossa Senhora Aparecida became a place where countless miracles and graces were attributed to the intercession of Our Lady. Comunidade Nossa Senhora Aparecida is a testament to the power of faith. It reminds us that even in the most ordinary of circumstances, the extraordinary can occur. It shows how a simple fishing trip, a moment of divine intervention, can shape the spiritual landscape of a nation.
