Its story began not in its current location but within the Colegio das Irmãs de Maria Ward a Jesuit order school. The community participated in celebrations and activities there until 1995. That year marked a significant move to its present home the Comunidade Beatíssima Virgem Maria. This vibrant community isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a bustling center of faith and action.
The Comunidade Beatíssima Virgem Maria-Paroquia Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres-Seminário São José is more than just its name suggests. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith in São Paulo. It hosts a wide array of activities. Catechism classes are held regularly. The rosary is prayed communally. Small groups delve into the Word of God. Dedicated teams visit the sick offering comfort and hope. Families find support through the Pastoral Familiar. Children are nurtured spiritually through the Pastoral da Criança. The building itself may be relatively new. Its origins however go far deeper. The Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres parish and the town of Itapecerica da Serra share a common beginning in 1689. Jesuit priests arrived to spread the Gospel among the indigenous people. They brought with them a statue of the Virgin Mary under the title of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres. Legend has it that the statue mysteriously refused to stay where the priests initially wanted to place it. Instead it kept appearing atop a hill with an indigenous cemetery. The priests understood this as a divine sign. They built the chapel on that sacred ground which eventually became the beautiful church we see today. The hill itself becomes symbolic a place where heaven and earth meet a fitting location for a place of worship.
