“A church built on hope” That’s how many describe Community United Methodist Church. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. Located in Washington Terrace this church wasn’t always here. Its origins trace back to a time of national crisis World War II.
In 1943 about 100 people gathered for the first Protestant worship service. They were drawn together by a shared need for faith and fellowship. Washington Terrace was then a new war-housing project bustling with people from across the country. They worked at nearby government installations. These early worshippers met in homes and community buildings. Their faith grew under the United Christian Ministry.
On January 16 1947 the Community Church of Washington Terrace officially organized. Seventy-seven charter members signed the founding documents. They laid a foundation for a church that would become a cornerstone of its community. This wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. It was about building bonds and supporting one another. The church grew in its importance becoming a central place for social activities community gatherings and spiritual guidance. It is remarkable that they managed to build this institution from scratch amidst the uncertainty and changes of the war years.
