Community Lutheran Church stands as a beacon of inclusivity in Washington D.C. Since 1891 the congregation has grown more visibly diverse. It embraces people of all ethnicities and races. All ages and sexual orientations are welcome here. This vibrant community welcomes single people and families. More and more neighbors are joining this church.

In 1989, Community Lutheran Church became a Reconciling in Christ congregation. This decision explicitly welcomes people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Visitors often comment on the real sense of community here at Community Lutheran Church. Caring for one another is highly valued. One expression of this care is Stephen Ministry. Trained lay leaders offer support to people going through difficult times.

Worship is central to the life of Community Lutheran Church. Many members help to prepare for the liturgy. They actively participate in the service. The liturgy style is fairly “high church” without being rigid. Music is extremely important. Most members appreciate a wide range of musical styles. The choir is a small talented group of twelve. Four paid section leaders anchor the choir. The von Beckerath organ is a source of great pride for many.

Community Lutheran Church has a deep concern for social ministry. In 1990, the congregation voted to use a bequest to begin Transitional Housing Corporation. Today it is known as Housing Up. Housing Up is a major provider of housing services in D.C. In 2016, Community Lutheran Church started a Food & Hygiene Pantry. Each month, the pantry delivers food, household, and personal care products to 27 Housing Up families. The church has a special focus on HIV/AIDS. It initiated two efforts. “God’s People Are Tested” and “Lutheran GrACE” brought congregations together. These programs worked to overcome stigma. Community Lutheran Church houses a new LSS program. This supports immigrants released into the community as an alternative to detention.

Connecting with busy people seeking a faith community is a challenge. Community Lutheran Church’s Sunday School and Confirmation programs are small but important. Vacation Bible School is lively. Since 2012, Community Lutheran Church has partnered with Body of Christ. This Latino Pentecostal congregation shares their space. Berea Seventh Day Adventist worships here on Saturdays too. In 2008, Community Lutheran Church underwent a major renovation. The renovation updated the HVAC. It brought accessibility, better lighting, and beautified the first floor.

Community Lutheran Church has served as an internship site for over 50 vicars and interns. The church values preparing pastors. Each new intern brings fresh energy and gifts.

In its 125th year, Community Lutheran Church undertook a visioning process. This process defined the church as a faith-rooted community with no walls. The church is always learning and always serving. Youth ministry became a top priority. Community Lutheran Church aims to serve the community through music and arts. In 2018, a group of ten youth attended MYLE and the Youth Gathering. Community Lutheran Church hired a Youth Ministry Developer in May 2019.

Community Lutheran Church looks to the future with hope. It is ready to embrace the path God has called it to. Community Lutheran Church actively lives out its commitment. It creates a welcoming space for all. It embodies its vision of a faith-rooted community.
