Here at the Community Hebrew Academy Of Toronto, or TanenbaumCHAT as it’s often called, history whispers tales of resilience and growth. This private Jewish high school, founded in 1960, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community. TanenbaumCHAT began its journey within the walls of the Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto. Later, in 1979, it found a new home, the former Wilmington Public School. This wasn’t just a change of address, but a symbol of the school’s expanding reach. The year 2000 marked the birth of a second campus, CHAT Richmond Hill, catering to students north of Steeles Avenue. This expansion reflected the growing Jewish community in the area. Later renamed the Kimel Family Education Centre, this campus served students until 2017. A generous gift from the estate of Dr. Anne Tanenbaum led to the school being renamed in her and her husband’s honor. The Anne & Max Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto, or TanenbaumCHAT, was born. In 2017, a decision was made to consolidate both campuses at the Wilmington Avenue location. This move streamlined operations and fostered a stronger sense of unity within the student body. TanenbaumCHAT faced a challenging time in 2023. During the Israel–Hamas war, the school received two bomb threats. This incident shook the community, highlighting the global tensions that can reach even the most local of spaces. Despite these challenges, TanenbaumCHAT continues to thrive. Its feeder schools, including Associated Hebrew Schools and Bialik Hebrew Day School, ensure a steady stream of eager learners. TanenbaumCHAT also welcomes students from public schools and other backgrounds through its New Stream program. The school’s recent expansion, with 14 new classrooms, underscores its commitment to providing quality education. The Community Hebrew Academy Of Toronto is more than just bricks and mortar.
