Gazing upon the unassuming facade of the Community Church of God, one might easily overlook its rich and layered history. This seemingly ordinary building holds within its walls tales of faith, perseverance, and community that span generations. The Community Church of God, as we know it today, began its journey rather humbly in the early 1900s. Bible studies, held in the homes of believers scattered across the rural landscapes of Fairfax and Prince William Counties, served as the genesis of this vibrant congregation. These early gatherings, hosted by families like the Kincheloes and the Comptons, drew in individuals from as far as Washington, D.C., seeking spiritual nourishment and fellowship. The Community Church of God’s story is one of resilience. Before finding a permanent home, the congregation navigated various locations, including a fire hall in Arlington and even a tent meeting that never quite materialized. Through it all, the unwavering faith of its members, particularly the women of the Dorcas Society, kept the spirit of community alive. Established in 1941, this group of women played a pivotal role in the church’s early development. They were not only dedicated to charitable works, crafting quilts and providing essential items to those in need, but also ardent Bible scholars, fostering a deep understanding of scripture within the community. The Community Church of God’s journey took a significant turn in 1953. On Valentine’s Day, the congregation officially organized, adopting a constitution and electing officers, marking the formal beginning of the Washington, D.C., Church of God. The church finally found a permanent sanctuary in 1968, acquiring a building on West Ox Road from the local Presbyterian Church. This milestone, thanks to the efforts of Robert Costello and the support of Helen and Orville Thompson, provided the growing congregation a place to call their own. The church’s name evolved over time, reflecting its changing location and identity. From Eternal Hope Church of God to Oak Hill Community Church of God and finally back to Fair Oaks Community Church of God – Abrahamic Faith, each name carries a piece of its unique story. The Community Church of God has faced its share of adversity, including two arson attacks. Yet, each time, the congregation rose from the ashes, stronger and more united, a testament to the unwavering faith of its members. The Community Church of God’s story is a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of faith, resilience, and the power of community. It is a story that continues to unfold within these walls, a testament to the enduring spirit of those who have called this place home.
