Established in 1898 as the Columbia Golf Club the Columbia Country Club boasts a rich history. Its current location in Chevy Chase Maryland dates back to 1909. This prestigious club occupies 146 acres of land. Initially a nine-hole course it expanded to its current eighteen holes.

The Columbia Country Club’s course has seen many changes. Initially designed by Herbert Barker it underwent renovations by Walter Travis in 1915. These improvements made it a favorite of President Woodrow Wilson. The course’s layout has changed considerably over time. Modern technology necessitated alterations to the original design. The famed acre of sand through the middle of the fifth hole is now grassed over. Despite these changes the 18th hole remains a superb finisher. It rises towards the clubhouse offering a stunning view.

Columbia Country Club hosted the 1921 U S Open. Jim Barnes won this prestigious event. Other significant events followed. These include the 2003 U S Junior Amateur Golf Championship and the 2021 United States Girls Junior Golf Championship.

For eight decades the club maintained an all-white all-male membership. This changed in 1989 under pressure from Maryland. The state threatened to remove a tax break if the club continued its discriminatory practices. The club responded by admitting women members. Even as late as 1990 there was an eight-year waiting list for membership.

The club’s history includes legal battles. It fought against the creation of the Georgetown Branch Trail. This trail utilized the old Baltimore & Ohio railroad right-of-way. The club’s opposition stemmed from its proximity to the course. Later the club also opposed the construction of Maryland’s Purple Line light rail. This led to negotiations and an agreement altering the rail line’s path.

Today Columbia Country Club continues to thrive. It is renowned for its challenging course. The club also offers a range of amenities including a clubhouse with an indoor swimming pool and fitness center. This private club holds a special place in golf history. Its story reflects both the evolution of golf and changing social attitudes.
