Early Māori named this peak Rangituhi, meaning ‘sky glow’. You can almost imagine the reddish glow at sunset, illuminating the slopes of Colonial Knob. Colonial Knob stands southwest of Porirua. It rises west of Tawa, a northern suburb of Wellington. The summit of Colonial Knob reaches 468 meters above sea level. From its peak, on a clear day, the views are breathtaking. You can spot Kapiti Island and Mana Island to the west. Looking south, you might even see the distant Kaikōura Ranges. Look north, and if you’re lucky, Mount Taranaki might reveal itself. The history of Colonial Knob intertwines with both nature and human endeavor. The hill is part of a much older geological story. It originated from a peneplain, a vast, eroded landmass formed millions of years ago. Over time, earthquakes lifted the peneplain, and erosion sculpted it into the hills. Today, Colonial Knob is a protected area known as the Rangituhi / Colonial Knob Scenic Reserve. It’s a sanctuary of native forest, a precious remnant in the Tawa-Porirua Basin. Two abandoned reservoirs, remnants of a bygone era, still stand on the slopes of Colonial Knob. Built in the late 19th century, these reservoirs once supplied water to the Porirua Hospital. They stand as silent witnesses to the changing needs of the community. Today, the reserve offers a tranquil escape, a place to connect with nature and history. If you are up for a hike, the Rangituhi / Colonial Knob Walkway awaits. This trail, part of the Te Araroa national walkway, takes you through the reserve’s diverse landscapes. As you ascend, you’ll encounter remnants of the past, echoes of the people who have walked these paths before you.
