“This building seems to touch the sky!” a child’s voice exclaimed. The Colonia-Haus does indeed stand tall, a striking presence in the Cologne skyline. Completed in 1973, the Colonia-Haus held the title of Germany’s tallest residential building until 2020. This 45-story skyscraper dominates the Riehl district. It boasts 373 units. Most of these, 352 to be exact, are apartments ranging from cozy 35 to spacious 118 square meters. The remaining units, located on the lower floors, are dedicated to commercial spaces. From 1973 to 1976, the Colonia-Haus was actually the tallest building in all of West Germany. Imagine the pride the residents must have felt! The building was originally owned by the Colonia insurance group. This explains the prominent lettering at the top and, of course, the building’s name. When AXA acquired Colonia in 1997, the signage briefly changed. However, the name Colonia-Haus remained, a testament to its legacy. Today, the Colonia-Haus stands as a proud symbol of Cologne’s architectural achievements.
