The collection’s heart is the Ambras Collection. Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol started it. He envisioned an ‘Armoury of Heroes’. He gathered weapons and armour from famous warriors. He included their portraits and biographies. Think of it as the world’s first museum catalogue. Published in 1601 it’s an illustrated inventory. It’s called the Armamentarium Heroicum.
But the Collection of Arms and Armour is more than just the Ambras Collection. The Habsburgs’ holdings in Vienna were housed in various places. The Ungarische Hof was one. The Stallburg another. Eventually the Imperial Arsenal became home to much of the collection. The Arsenal was later demolished but its contents survived. They were combined with the Ambras Collection.
