“Is it true about the bell?” a student whispered, eyes wide with a mix of excitement and trepidation. “That seniors get to ring it on their last day?” This legend, passed down through generations of students at Colégio Dante Alighieri, adds to the mystique of this São Paulo institution. Colégio Dante Alighieri stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Italian culture in Brazil. Founded in 1911 by Italian immigrants, including Count Rodolfo Crespi, the school’s initial name, Istituto Medio Italo-Brasiliano Dante Alighieri, reflected its mission to preserve Italian heritage. The school sits on the former Dieberger estate, a sprawling property near Avenida Paulista. The original Leonardo da Vinci building, the beehive structure, and the central courtyard with its original flooring are recognized landmarks, protected by both the city and state. In the early years, Colégio Dante Alighieri offered a bilingual curriculum, attracting students eager to learn in both Italian and Portuguese. Even a future president of Brazil, Jânio Quadros, taught here from 1943 to 1948. A story goes that Quadros, known for his fiery temper, once tossed a student out the window, deeming the door too good an exit. The school’s Italian ties were tested during World War II when the Vargas dictatorship banned Italian language instruction. During this time, the school even had its name temporarily changed to Colégio Visconde de São Leopoldo. But in 1946, the name Colégio Dante Alighieri was restored. The school later revived its parallel Italian curriculum and extracurricular Italian language programs, a reaffirmation of its cultural heritage. Colégio Dante Alighieri continued to make headlines in recent times. In 2016, a history teacher’s use of gender-neutral language sparked debate. More seriously, in 2022, the school investigated a rumored school shooting plot and later exposed a student WhatsApp group featuring inappropriate content. These incidents underscore the challenges faced by even elite institutions in a changing world. The school’s symbols, the coat of arms with its stars, she-wolf, and symbolic colors, the bell that students dream of ringing, and the stirring school hymn, all contribute to the rich tapestry of Colégio Dante Alighieri. They represent a link to the past and a hope for the future. They tell the story of a school dedicated to knowledge, cultural preservation, and the shaping of young minds.
