“Methodist Church to be erected on this site.” Those were the words that sparked a spiritual awakening. In 1965, a simple wooden sign announced the coming of Clinton United Methodist Church.
Today we stand before Clinton United Methodist Church. It is a beacon of love, hope, peace, and light. The church began its journey on October 31, 1965.
Let’s step back to the beginning. The Oregon Conference appointed Reverend Edward Terry as pastor in September 1965. On October 1, 1965, he became the founding pastor. This happened after being transferred to the Washington-Baltimore Conference. The first service took place on October 3, 1965. It was held at Crestview Elementary School.
Clinton United Methodist Church was formally established on October 31, 1965. The charter members consisted of 27 families. Bells United Methodist Church offered support. Mr. and Mrs. Eaton helped organize the Sunday school program. Mr. John Mathena led the first choir rehearsal. Mr. Ed Benson, the first organist, hosted practices in his home. This was because the church lacked a piano.
In December 1965, architect Benjamin Elliott was hired. He created plans for the new church building. The land where Clinton United Methodist Church now stands was purchased. It was a gift from the Conference Board of Missions. A picture of the building plan hangs in the church office. Missionary funds bought the parsonage.
During the first half of 1966, Sunday School Services moved. They were held at Surrattsville Junior High School. The church’s success stemmed from fellowship. It was built on compassion, faith, and teamwork.
The groundbreaking ceremony occurred on January 15, 1967. Despite the cold, spirits were high. The first section of the building was built without fundraising. In October 1968, Reverend Robert Moales delivered the first sermon.
Clinton United Methodist Church is a diverse church. It is predominantly African-American. It embraces multiple cultures and ethnicities. The church is near Andrews Air Force Base. It includes active duty members and veterans.
Many pastors have led Clinton United Methodist Church. Each brought unique gifts to their role. Currently, Reverend Melaina Trice leads the congregation. She has served as the senior pastor since July 1, 2024. She is passionate about social justice. She aims to remove barriers to inclusivity.
