A monument to perseverance stands before you. This is the Cleary Memorial. It honors Thomas Cleary a pioneer of the Hibernian Society. For twenty-five years he served as secretary of the St Patrick’s Branch.

Cleary’s life wasn’t easy. The Hibernian Society faced challenges. Some viewed it with suspicion. Others saw it as a secret Fenian organization. But Cleary persevered. His dedication led to the society’s widespread respect. It grew from Broken Hill to Byron Bay.

The unveiling of the Cleary Memorial was a grand event. It took place at Rookwood Cemetery on Sunday June 5 1898. A large crowd gathered. Cleary’s widow and children were present. Brother E Moore the District President spoke. He lauded Cleary’s efforts. He highlighted his strength of character. The monument would ensure Cleary’s memory lived on. It would inspire others to work for their community’s welfare.

The memorial itself is a grave monument. It stands in Section M1 Row AA Plot 287 of the Catholic Section at Rookwood Necropolis. This quiet spot is a testament to a man who made a significant contribution to the Hibernian Society and to the wider community. Take a moment to reflect on his life. Think of the obstacles he overcame. Consider the legacy he left behind. The Cleary Memorial is more than just a stone. It’s a symbol of dedication and perseverance. It stands as a reminder of the importance of community and the impact one person can have.
