Curious to discover a hidden gem in Trieste? The Civico Acquario Marino stands ready to surprise. It is more than just an aquarium. It is a journey into the marine world.

The Civico Acquario Marino was established in 1933. It was designed as an open cycle aquarium. This means it directly uses sea water. The water flows through the tanks and back into the sea.

Inside the Civico Acquario Marino, you will find 25 tanks. These tanks recreate various marine environments. They primarily showcase Adriatic species. See coelenterates, annelids, molluscs, echinoderms and crustaceans. These creatures represent the diverse life in the Adriatic Sea.

Once, the Civico Acquario Marino even housed penguins. These penguins came from South Africa. One penguin, named Marco, lived here for 31 years. Marco became a beloved figure.

The building itself has a history. It was erected in 1913. Giorgio Polli designed it. The “bell tower” on the left was once a water tower. It held a raised tank of seawater. This water supplied the fish stalls.

Upstairs, the vivarium awaits at the Civico Acquario Marino. It houses amphibians, reptiles, and freshwater fish. These species come from the region and nearby areas. A large terrarium replicates a Karst pond. Common toads and green frogs breed here.

The Civico Acquario Marino’s ground floor features a large octagonal tank. Sharks and rays swim in this tank. It is a captivating sight.

Consider the former fish market. It once had a large central hall. Sales counters lined the space. The opposite side held the fish auction room. Now, it serves as the main entrance to the exhibition hall.

The Civico Acquario Marino offers insight into marine life. Its design reflects a commitment to the sea. The aquarium’s displays educate and inspire.

Trieste’s Civic Marine Aquarium is a unique destination. It blends history, architecture, and marine biology. It is a place where visitors can connect with the underwater world. The Civico Acquario Marino invites everyone to explore its wonders.
