From its perch on the Pankrác Plain, City Tower dominates Prague’s skyline. City Tower stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. Its story begins in 1985, envisioned as the headquarters for Czechoslovak Radio. Construction progressed until 1993, when the project stalled. The building stood incomplete, riddled with asbestos, a symbol of a changing world. Several attempted sales fell through. In 1999, ECM finally acquired the building for a mere 285 million CZK. Architect Richard Meier breathed new life into City Tower. The radical reconstruction began in 2005. This involved over 2300 tons of steel and 30,500 square meters of glass. In 2008, City Tower emerged, a gleaming 109-meter skyscraper. It boasts the fastest elevators in the Czech Republic, reaching speeds of 6 meters per second. City Tower houses businesses and a top-floor restaurant. This restaurant, the highest in the Czech Republic, has earned Michelin’s Bib Gourmand award since 2013. City Tower changed hands twice more. First to Marpona a.s. in 2009 for €130 million. Then to Consideratio, under Proxy-Finance holding, in 2012 for an undisclosed sum. City Tower’s story is one of adaptation. From a derelict shell to a modern marvel, it showcases Prague’s evolving spirit.
