Tucked away in Vanier Park stands the City of Vancouver Archives a treasure trove of history. This isn’t just any building. It’s the first building in Canada built specifically as a city archive. Imagine the stories held within its walls.
The City of Vancouver Archives isn’t just a repository for government documents. It’s the heart of Vancouver’s collective memory. It houses personal and corporate records. The archives’ journey began with J S Matthews a Welshman who arrived in Vancouver in 1898. He started collecting artifacts interviewing early residents and writing historical narratives. His personal collection eventually became the city’s official archive in 1933. But the path wasn’t smooth. Matthews had a dispute with Mayor Gerry McGeer over ownership. He even moved the collection back to his home for a while. The archives didn’t get its permanent home until 1972. Matthews’s legacy continues to shape the archives even today.
The current building designed by architect Chris Blencowe is a masterpiece. It minimizes parkland usage with a series of landscaped platforms. The entrance lobby and reading room are accessible via a stunning glass-roofed walkway. From this walkway you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city. This innovative design was a hallmark of its time.
Beyond the impressive building the archives hold an astonishing amount of information. There are 8.8 kilometers of paper records. That’s enough to stretch from the archives to Burnaby! Add to that 90 terabytes of digital documents including photographs and videos. It’s a testament to the scale of Vancouver’s history. Even the first minutes from Vancouver’s first official council meeting survived the Great Vancouver Fire. They reside here in remarkably good condition.
