“Is it true this school actually closed?” a student might have whispered in the hallways of City Collegiate Primary Charter School. Yes, sadly, it’s true. City Collegiate Primary Charter School, once bustling with the energy of young learners, closed its doors in June 2010. City Collegiate Primary Charter School opened in the fall of 2006. It served students in grades 6 through 8. Located at 2001 S Street, NW in Ward 2 of Washington D.C., the school initially held high hopes. However, declining enrollment led to financial difficulties. The school expected 100 students in the 2009-2010 school year but only 70 enrolled. This lower-than-expected enrollment meant less per-pupil funding. This made necessary staffing and curriculum improvements impossible. The school leadership made the difficult decision to relinquish their charter. The D.C. Public Charter School Board approved the request in December 2009. The remaining school year focused on helping students improve their reading and math scores for the DC CAS. The Public Charter School Board worked with City Collegiate Primary Charter School leaders to ensure a smooth transition. They helped parents find new schools for their children for the fall of 2010.
