Founded in the 1950s as the Harfield Road Assembly of God City Church Harfield has a rich history. It began meeting in various locations before finding a permanent home at 60 Harfield Road Kenilworth in 1964. This marked a significant milestone. It became the first Assembly of God church in the Western Cape.
The church quickly grew. By the mid-1960s under the leadership of Paul Lange a new 330-seater building was constructed. Sunday services attracted as many as 500 people. This incredible growth continued under John Bond starting in 1969. The era coincided with the “Hippie Revival”. The church’s influence expanded. Ten new churches were established as a result of this flourishing period.
In 2016 a major transformation occurred. Under John and Debbie Sloane City Church Harfield was renamed a|CITY CHURCH. The name change reflected a vision. The church aimed to be a “city on a hill that cannot be hidden” as described in Matthew 5:14. The church embraced its multicultural community. It shifted from simply being a place to attend to being a place to actively live out one’s faith.
Today a|CITY CHURCH continues to thrive. It focuses on creating a refreshing relevant relational and real environment. Their services strive to be life-giving. The aim is to lift lives. Built upon a strong foundation a|CITY CHURCH is writing a new chapter in its story. This church continues to be a vibrant part of the Kenilworth community. It serves as a beacon of faith hope and love. This is a testament to its enduring legacy and ongoing impact. It stands as a symbol of faith and community in Cape Town.
