“Ready to try something gnarly?” I ask. Welcome to Circuit Boulder in Cape Town. It is more than just a climbing spot. It is an experience. Here, bouldering meets the soul of South Africa.
Cape Town cradles this unique landscape. It is set between the mountains and the ocean. The city’s heart beats with the rhythm of climbers. They come seeking challenges right here at Circuit Boulder.
Most climbers might first think of Rocklands. But Cape Town hides bouldering treasures. Circuit Boulder is one such gem right in the city. Imagine tackling problems under the Table Mountain amphitheater. The atmosphere? Simply amazing.
The City Bouldering District, or CBD, awaits. It is not like Rocklands where boulders tightly pack together. But here at Circuit Boulder, a fulfilling workout is always on offer. It does not matter what grade you climb. Even after work, the challenges are there.
Think about fitting a visit here around a Rocklands trip. Or maybe while enjoying Cape Town’s city life, beaches, and restaurants. Then try some gnarly problems at Circuit Boulder.
Timing is key. December to April is Cape Town’s summer. Late afternoons into evenings become perfect for climbing. The city lights and sunset create dusk sessions. They are nothing short of spectacular. The heat from the CBD adds warmth. It makes Circuit Boulder climbable longer than other spots.
Don’t arrive too early. Aim for 4:30 PM. The sun dips behind Kloof Nek around 5 PM. You can climb until 8:30 PM. Or even later if you want to push yourself.
May to August sees cooler weather. Mornings and midday become prime climbing times. Watch the weather apps. Take a chance. You might be rewarded with perfect conditions for harder problems.
There are three main areas to explore at Circuit Boulder. They are accessible from five different parking spots. There is Deer Park. This area spreads between Tafelberg Road and Upper Vredehoek.
Then, there is the Deer Park Schadenfreude Area. Access it from Molteno Road or Tafelberg Road. Finally, discover the Lights Area. It sits above Tafelberg Road near the Table Mountain lights. Climbing here at night when the lights are on is something else.
Remember Tree Traverse Boulder? It offers the chance to adjust your session to suit your mood. It is about 40 moves long with no highballs.
Safety is important. Deer Park is busy. You will see bikers and hikers. Lights Area is quieter. You will likely only encounter other boulderers or rangers.
Many boulders and problems await discovery here at Circuit Boulder. Explore this landscape and grow stronger. Maybe our paths will cross by chance in the CBD.
