In 1912, Vincenzo Arnaldi opened the doors to the Cine Theatro de Variedades Carlos Gomes. It wasn’t always located here on Rua Senador Fláquer. Originally, the Cine Teatro Carlos Gomes stood at the corner of Rua Coronel Oliveira Lima and what is now Rua Savino Degni. This first location served as a hub of cultural activity in the burgeoning ABC region. It was the first cinema in the municipality and played a vital role in the birth of the region’s theatrical movement. The Cine Teatro Carlos Gomes also hosted lively carnival balls, concerts, and musical performances. The year 1925 marked a significant change for the Cine Teatro Carlos Gomes. It moved to its current home on Rua Senador Fláquer, a building specifically designed by Arthur Boschetti to house a performance venue. Originally called simply “Theatro Carlos Gomes,” the building boasted neoclassical architectural features on its facade. A grand hall inside, complete with boxes encircling the seating area, could accommodate up to 800 people. In the early 20th century, the Cine Teatro Carlos Gomes became a vital community space and a focal point for cultural expression. It provided access to cultural activities for residents of the Estação and Ipiranguinha neighborhoods. It also attracted people from more distant parts of the municipality. Its multicultural offerings extended beyond its walls with circus performances and carnival parades in the surrounding streets. The Cine Teatro Carlos Gomes remained a cultural force for many years. It maintained a loyal and growing audience that spurred renovations. In the 1940s and 50s, the original flooring was replaced with ipê wood planks. A balcony was added to the mezzanine to increase capacity. A star-shaped lighting and ventilation system was installed in the ceiling. The facade was also updated with a marquee supported by rectangular columns, giving it an Art Deco touch. Sadly, like many cinemas, the Cine Teatro Carlos Gomes suffered a decline in the mid-1970s with the rise of television. The building closed in the 1980s. A 1988 renovation to install a fabric store in the front and a parking lot where the audience once sat led to the complete destruction of the original facade. Public outcry, particularly from the SOS Carlos Gomes movement, led to the building’s expropriation in 1991. It reopened the following year as a cultural space, offering cultural activities and training in film and video. Further setbacks occurred in 2009 when the space was closed due to poor maintenance. A misguided renovation project in 2012 nearly obliterated its character. Responding to renewed public pressure and acknowledging the theater’s place in the community’s affections, the city undertook a restoration project. They sought to revive its original multicultural spirit. The Cine Teatro Carlos Gomes was designated a cultural heritage site of Santo André in October 1992 by COMDEPHAAPASA. This recognition reflects its long-standing presence in the landscape, its symbolic value as a cultural center, and its eclectic architectural characteristics. The complete restoration was finally unveiled on April 8, 2022, returning the Cine Teatro Carlos Gomes to its rightful place as a cultural beacon.
