“Free Warsaw will never forget those who with their toil and blood were the first to start the work of rebuilding it.” These words etched on a plaque stand as a testament to the heroism commemorated by the Chwała Saperom Statue. Right here before us stands this powerful monument. It’s a tribute to the sappers who cleared Warsaw of mines and rubble after the devastating Second World War.

The Chwała Saperom Statue isn’t just a statue. It’s a three-part composition. The central piece shows a sapper disarming a mine. He’s surrounded by six towering pylons. They symbolize a mine explosion. These pylons bear eighteen bronze bas-reliefs. These depict the sappers’ arduous work. This included demining and rebuilding bridges. It was unveiled on May 8 1975. This marked the 30th anniversary of the war’s end.

The statue’s creation was no small feat. It was designed by Stanisław Kulon and Eugeniusz Kozak. Their winning design was chosen from a competition. The impressive bronze castings were made in the Marcel Nowotko Mechanical Works in Warsaw. The Wrocław River Shipyard also contributed to its construction.

But the Chwała Saperom Statue tells a story beyond its central figure. Another part of the monument is a bas-relief. It’s found in an underground passage under the Wisłostrada. This section commemorates soldiers who landed to aid Warsaw during the Uprising. A final piece stands in the Vistula River. It shows soldiers driving a post into the riverbed. This represents the foundation of a new bridge.

The Chwała Saperom Statue stands as a poignant reminder. It reminds us of the immense sacrifice and dedication. The sappers’ tireless work made the city’s rebuilding possible. It’s a moving tribute to their courage. Their efforts laid the groundwork for a new Warsaw. Their legacy is forever etched in bronze and steel. Remember their names. Remember their sacrifice. Remember the Chwała Saperom Statue.
