The shimmering surface of Chvalský rybnický reflects the sky. Its waters whisper tales of centuries past. This isn’t just any pond. It’s Chvalský rybnický a historical Prague treasure.
Chvalský rybnický is one of Prague’s oldest fishponds. Written records mention it as early as the 18th century. It was linked to a nearby mill. Maps from 1848 show the pond was much larger than today. Dredging reduced its size. The mud was piled high on one side.
More than just a fishpond Chvalský rybnický played a vital role. It provided water for the mill. It also served as a fish farm. It even functioned as a swimming pool in the 1970s. That’s right a swimming pool. Can you imagine splashing around in this historic spot?
In the 20th century the pond saw several repairs. Its walls were reinforced with concrete. A new concrete drainage system was built. Sadly an old safety overflow became non-functional.
The state of Chvalský rybnický prompted action. In 2011 Horní Počernice transferred ownership. The City of Prague’s environmental department took over. They included the pond in a nationwide project. The goal was to restore and revitalize Prague’s reservoirs.
Revitalization began in 2012. 3500 cubic meters of sediment were removed. The depth was about half a meter. This improved water quality significantly.
The original sandstone wall was damaged. It couldn’t be saved. A new reinforced concrete wall replaced it. This features a stone cladding of Bohemian porphyry. The top was finished with sandstone coping and stylish railings.
The old concrete safety overflow was removed. A new high-capacity safety overflow with a drainage system was built. The edges were finished with sandstone.
Damaged banks were repaired. The left bank was reinforced underwater with stones. The right bank was reshaped for a gentle slope. It was stabilized with vegetation.
The back of the pond had its bank lowered. This improved access to the water. The revitalization also included landscaping.
Water quality depends on inflow and fish farming. Unfortunately some residents still discharge wastewater. The local authority is actively addressing this problem.
Today Chvalský rybnický supports extensive carp farming. It’s a low-impact method. There’s no feeding or fertilization. This preserves water quality. Each autumn the pond is drained. It is then cleaned.
