Stepping onto the grounds of Churchill Heights Public School, one can almost hear the echoes of students from past generations. Churchill Heights Public School first opened its doors in 1957, welcoming students from kindergarten to grade 8. Churchill Heights Public School has been serving the Scarborough community for decades. Originally, it catered to students from kindergarten through grade 8. The school went through a significant change in 1971 with the introduction of congregated classes for gifted students. This program aimed to nurture the unique talents of these children. Churchill Heights Public School became a dual-track school, offering both regular and gifted programs. The regular program now serves students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. The gifted program welcomes students from Grades 4 to 8. Interestingly, the school also has a small combined primary/gifted class. Churchill Heights Public School is well-regarded for its music program. Students in grades 5-8 learn instrumental music, while primary students focus on vocal and Orff music. The school holds two concerts each year to showcase the students’ musical achievements. A senior band provides further opportunities for advanced musicians. An itinerant music teacher visits weekly. The school also participates in the Ontario Band Association Music Festival. Beyond academics, Churchill Heights Public School offers a vibrant student life. Every other year, the grade 7 and 8 students embark on a week-long graduation trip. Previous destinations have included Ottawa, Quebec City, and Washington D.C. These trips combine educational activities with the chance for students to bond with their peers and experience new environments. Every year, Grade 6 students enjoy a three-day overnight trip to Camp Kearney, Ontario. This outdoor experience introduces students to environmental awareness, leadership, and team-building activities. For many, it’s their first time away from home. The annual Heritage Fair allows students in grades 5-8 to delve into historical research. They present their findings at the Civic Centre, often winning awards for their in-depth work and presentations. Churchill Heights Public School has a strong tradition of parent involvement. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in classrooms, the library, and on school excursions. The School Council plays an active role in the school community, meeting regularly to discuss school matters and fundraising initiatives.
