That’s a long time ago. The congregation quickly outgrew their original home. They moved to a new geodesic dome-shaped building in 1962. Can you imagine a church shaped like a giant dome? This wasn’t just any dome. At the time it boasted the largest church auditorium in all of Canada. That’s quite an achievement.
But even that impressive building couldn’t keep up with the growing congregation. By 1984 they needed more space. So they tore down the dome. They built the magnificent structure you see today. This new church opened in 1985. It was even bigger than the dome. It could seat 4000 people. Think about that for a moment. Four thousand people all in one place. One mile of pews were needed. Two acres of carpeting covered the floor. It even had its own television production capabilities. That’s how impressive it was.
But the story doesn’t end there. The church wasn’t always known as Church on the Queensway. It was originally named Queensway Cathedral. This name changed in 2013. It became Church on the Queensway. This more accurately reflects its location on this busy thoroughfare.
