“Ever wonder where faith and community intertwine?” The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of Washington District of Columbia stands as a testament to both. For nearly 90 years it has steadfastly preached the gospel of Jesus Christ. This church emphasizes His love and saving grace.
The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ is an Apostolic soul-saving church. Its roots trace back 2000 years to the day of Pentecost. The church believes salvation involves repenting of sins. This stems from hearing and believing the Word of God. It also includes baptism by immersion in the name of Jesus. The baptism of the Holy Ghost with speaking in tongues is also important. The Spirit of God gives the utterance.
Bishop John T. Leslie, Jr. became the fourth pastor in August 1980. He continued to lead the church in the spirit of evangelism. Bishop Leslie also brought a new dimension with his gift of teaching.
Over the years, Bishop Leslie has used his gift to reach members and the community. He does it through various mediums. These include a weekly radio broadcast called “Everybody Can’t Be Right”. There are also Friday Night Christian Education classes for all ages. Other ministries include Evangelical Training Association classes and a Summer Vacation Bible School. My Brother’s Keeper and My Sister’s Keepers are for youth. A Deaf Ministry serves the hearing impaired. The Missionary Outreach ministry includes foreign missions and ministries at local prisons. There are also ministries at Althea Nursing Home and the Kenyon Street Group Home. The church also ministers to the Lamont Street Shelter and the Stanton Street Shelter. St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Ministry also exists with a Street Ministry. There is also a Children’s Church Ministry and a Community Outreach Center. A Child Development Center also exists.
Elder Robert F. Taylor is the Assistant Pastor of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ. He was ordained in May 2005. Elder Taylor has held numerous positions at the church. He continues to be a wonderful asset.
The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ honors the Bible as the Word of God. They preach the same message of salvation as the apostles did. Their invitation is simple. “Become a Bible Christian”. All are welcome to come and fellowship.
The church has many ministries. Sister Rosa Powell leads the Armor Bearers/First Lady ministry. First Lady Louise Leslie and Deacon Frank Collins oversee Baptism. Sister Paula Mosby takes care of Beautification. Evangelist Doris Thompson leads the Bereavement ministry. Minister David Street leads the Brotherhood. District Elder Robert Taylor heads the Cabinet. Evangelist Alice Howard is in charge of the Children’s Ministry. Sister Jacqueline Shivers is responsible for the Culinary ministry. Evangelist Sabrina Jackson leads Daughters of Zion. Brother Terrell Worrell and Professor Wilbur Belton oversee Drama/Arts. Elder Philip Leslie is in charge of Favored Media. Sister Darlene Richardson leads the Grant Team. Brother Walter Brown and Deacon Stephen T. Leslie, Sr. manage Marquee Communications. District Elder Robert Taylor and Evangelist Margaret Williams head the Ministerial Alliance. Evangelist Beatrice Crandell leads the Missionary efforts. Professor Wilbur Belton, Jr. is in charge of Music. Deacon John Leslie, III oversees Sanctuary Services. Evangelist Lena Hordge leads the Seasoned Saints. Sister Lola Daniels and Sister Brittany Berry guide the Singles ministry. Evangelist Alice Howard and Deacon Richard Ifill are in charge of Street Ministry. Deacon Frank Collins leads Sunday School. Deacon Richard Ifill also manages Transportation. Sister Denise Barnes is responsible for Young People.
The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ continues to monitor official government updates. These updates provide clarity and direction for gatherings. The church asks its members to practice good citizenship. They should align with current mandates. They should continue practicing good health habits. This helps bring COVID-19 to a halt.
