“Since 1900 prayers have been offered on this holy ground.” That’s quite a history isn’t it. We are standing before the Nativity Catholic Church. It is located at 6001 13th St NW in Washington DC. This century-old church graces the Brightwood neighborhood.
The first Mass here was celebrated in 1901. Generations of faithful Catholics helped build this community. They were of Irish and German descent. Nativity consists of five buildings. They stand proudly in Brightwood at Georgia Ave NW and Peabody Street.
Since the 1960s the Black Catholic community has been integral here. They have treasured and maintained the church’s heritage. They preserved the spirit of charity here at the Nativity Catholic Church.
Saints have walked here. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited. Her spiritual friend was Bishop William Curlin. He was a former pastor here. He also served as Auxiliary Bishop of Washington.
Thousands of children received instruction here. They received sacraments as well. Nativity’s school closed in 2007. Nativity continues its mission. It is a place of daily prayer. It is a place of love and community. Outreach to the needy is a constant endeavor. The church’s heritage and roots are deep. Its mission is the mission of The Church.
Nativity offers various Mass times. On Sundays, you can attend at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM or 1:00 PM in Spanish. The Saturday Vigil Mass is at 5:00 PM. During the week, Mass is offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 12:00 PM. Holy Days have Masses at 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM in Spanish.
Confession times are on Saturday. You can confess your sins from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Eucharistic Adoration is also offered. It takes place on the First Friday of the month. It follows the Noon Mass and resumes at 7:00 pm.
Note that there is no Mass on Wednesdays. There are also no Masses on National Holidays. Funerals may alter the schedule, so check the parish website.
