Did the echoes of gospel hymns and community service resonate from this very spot? Right here, in the heart of Washington, D.C., stands the Church of God. Officially known as the World Mission Society Church of God in Washington, D.C., U.S., this unassuming building holds a story of faith, service, and community engagement. Established in August 2007, the Church of God found its current home in a new temple in July 2012. This two-story building, with a basement and a total floor area exceeding 640 square meters, houses a main worship hall, fellowship hall, study rooms, a multi-purpose room, a cafeteria, and various activity rooms. But the Church of God is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community dedicated to preaching the gospel and serving its neighbors. The members of the Church of God actively engage with the diverse population of Washington, D.C., sharing their beliefs and extending a helping hand. They’ve responded to disasters near and far. When a tornado struck Lynchburg, Virginia, in April 2018, Church of God members drove over four hours to assist in recovery efforts, clearing debris and offering support. Similarly, they provided aid after the devastating floods in West Virginia in June 2016 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The Church of God’s commitment to disaster relief goes beyond immediate assistance. Members have even completed the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program, equipping them with skills in fire safety, search and rescue, and animal relief. This training allows them to effectively collaborate with authorities during emergencies. The Church of God in Washington, D.C. champions environmental protection. They have organized cleanups in Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens, collecting hundreds of kilograms of trash. Their university student volunteer group, ASEZ, is equally dedicated to environmentalism, earning praise from local residents and even collaborating with the UN on sustainable development goals. In June 2020, ASEZ WAO, their young adult worker volunteer group, tackled plastic pollution in Rock Creek Park. They later partnered with the Anacostia Riverkeeper to remove trash from the Anacostia River. Beyond disaster relief and environmentalism, the Church of God demonstrates neighborly love through blood drives, support for educators, and youth programs. They assisted at President Trump’s inauguration in 2017, volunteered at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, and hosted dinners for local police officers. This dedication has earned them recognition, including the Promising Partnership Award from the Mayor of Washington, D.C. The Church of God’s story is one of active faith, where belief translates into tangible action, making a positive impact on the Washington, D.C. community and beyond. Their commitment to service and community engagement is a testament to their belief in spreading God’s love through practical acts of kindness.
