Three families a dream and a converted army barracks. That’s the story of the Church of Christ at Manor Woods. It all began in 1946 in Wheaton. Three families joined forces to plant a new church. They officially incorporated in 1947. Their first home a repurposed army barracks on University Boulevard. It was remodeled to include a baptistry.
The Church of Christ at Manor Woods wasn’t just a building. It was a community. A place where faith flourished and lives were transformed. The church grew quickly. Ken and Jan Meade joined in 1956. Ken eventually became the full-time Senior Minister in 1961. The congregation outgrew its modest beginnings. For two years they temporarily worshipped at English Manor Elementary School. This was while their new permanent home was being built.
In 1966 the Church of Christ at Manor Woods found its current home on Norbeck Road in Rockville. It wasn’t quite in the city yet they called it the “boonies”. This building wasn’t the end of the growth. Large additions were constructed in 1982 and 1992. These additions provided more worship fellowship and education space. The Church of Christ at Manor Woods was more than just Sunday services. They actively participated in the surrounding community. They supported various missions both locally and internationally.
This wasn’t just any church. The Church of Christ at Manor Woods is part of the Restoration movement. They strive to restore the pattern of the New Testament church. They focus on simple clear biblical instructions. They aim to remove man-made additions and focus on God’s plan. Their services include prayer praise and preaching. They celebrate the Lord’s Supper every week. Their beliefs are rooted in the Bible. They believe in one God the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit. They emphasize the importance of Jesus Christ as the one and only savior. They also believe in the Holy Spirit the Bible as God’s Word and the importance of baptism.
