“Lost in translation” in Chuo City? Not with this tale! Chuo City, the vibrant heart of Tokyo, pulsates with a history as rich as the tuna once auctioned at the world-famous Tsukiji Fish Market. Chuo City wasn’t always a single entity. It emerged in 1947 from the union of Kyobashi and Nihonbashi wards, becoming the “Central Ward” in both name and spirit. Imagine bustling Edo, the city that would become Tokyo. Chuo City was its core, the Shitamachi, the original downtown. This area, especially Ginza and Tsukiji, started as mere sand piled at the Sumida River delta before the shogunate transformed it. Chuo City holds the key to understanding Tokyo’s evolution from Edo. In 1612, Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu envisioned Edo as Japan’s capital and began developing a commercial hub around the Tōkaidō, the vital road connecting Tokyo and the Kansai region. After the devastating fire of 1657, the city was redesigned with more canals to facilitate maritime trade. Fast forward to 1872, another fire ravaged Ginza. Tokyo’s governor then reimagined it as a modern, European-style district, linking the railway terminal at Shinbashi with the financial center of Nihonbashi. This is the Ginza we know today, a dazzling spectacle of neon lights and high-end boutiques. Chuo City is a place of contrasts. While it boasts the glitz of Ginza, it also housed the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market until its inner market moved to Toyosu in 2018. Even though the famous tuna auctions are gone, the outer market still thrives, offering a sensory feast of fresh seafood, produce, and kitchenware. And let’s not forget the architectural marvel of Tsukiji Hongan-ji, a Jōdo Shinshū temple with its distinctive South Asian-inspired design. From the “zero milestone” of Nihonbashi Bridge, where all distances to Tokyo are measured, to the towering skyscrapers of the financial district, Chuo City embodies the dynamism of Tokyo. It’s a city where history whispers from the narrow alleyways and modernity shouts from the neon signs, a captivating blend of old and new.
