Chuo City was formed in 1947. It was a merger of Kyobashi and Nihonbashi. This was after Tokyo City became Tokyo Metropolis. The Sumida River forms the eastern boundary of Chuo City. Many small rivers and canals used to crisscross the area. These waterways were filled in after World War II. They made way for roads buildings and expressways. The former waterways created many of the neighborhood divisions.
Chuo City is home to many important companies. Ricoh moved its headquarters here in 2006. Sumitomo Corporation is also based here. Many other major businesses including Daiichi Sankyo Ajinomoto and Mitsui Fudosan have their headquarters in Chuo City. This highlights its ongoing importance as a commercial center.
Chuo City is also home to several educational institutions. These include Shizenkan University and St Luke’s International University. Waseda University has a campus in the Nihonbashi area. The city boasts numerous elementary and junior high schools. These are operated by the Chuo City Board of Education. Public high schools are under the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
