“Fragrant Mountain.” That was the former name of a place now known as Zhongshan. Today we are at Chung Shui Ling. It is a place steeped in history and transformation. Imagine yourself standing here centuries ago. The Pearl River estuary stretches before you. Only scattered islands break the water’s surface.

Over time, silt deposits gradually formed dry land. This is how Zhongshan came to be. The northern parts emerged much later during the Ming dynasty. Initially, this area was part of Dongguan County during the Tang dynasty. Salt production thrived here. In 1082, a fortified settlement named Xiangshan appeared. It marked the official start of the name. Xiangshan prospered and became a county in 1152.

After the Southern Song dynasty fell many court officials settled in Xiangshan. They included members of the imperial family. Land formation continued significantly from the Ming dynasty onward. During the Qing dynasty, embankments prevented flooding. Cultivation expanded across new alluvial lands.

Much of the First Opium War unfolded here. In 1839, Lin Zexu expelled British traders. Qing soldiers resisted British attacks in 1840. Ultimately, they were overwhelmed.

The Opium Wars opened the region to foreign influence. Many Xiangshan residents sought education overseas. One notable figure was Sun Zhongshan. He later became known as Sun Yat-sen. These individuals shaped modern China. Xiangshan was among the first counties liberated in the Xinhai Revolution.

After Sun Zhongshan’s death in 1925, the county was renamed in his honor. It became Zhongshan. Nationalist and Communist units launched guerrilla attacks on Japanese forces in 1942. On August 15, 1945, Japanese forces surrendered unconditionally. Zhongshan was liberated.

Zhongshan saw fighting during the Chinese Civil War. Nationalists held it for much of the war. On October 30, 1949, the People’s Liberation Army defeated Nationalist forces. The county then fell under the People’s Republic of China.

In 1983, Zhongshan’s administrative status rose. It became a county-level city under Foshan. By 1988, Zhongshan achieved prefecture-level city status.

Zhongshan is located on the west side of the Pearl River’s mouth. It faces Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Guangzhou and Foshan lie to its north. Zhuhai and Macau are to its south. The northern part sits on alluvial plains. The southern part extends into coastal hills.

The Wugui Hills are a prominent feature. Their main summit rises to 531 meters. The city has a warm, humid climate. The average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius. Rainfall averages 175 centimeters annually. Typhoons and thunderstorms are common.

Today, Zhongshan boasts numerous parks and wide boulevards. Notable sights include Sunwen Road West. It features restored colonial-era buildings. The Fufeng Pagoda, built in 1608, stands in Zhongshan Park. Sunwen Memorial Park houses a large bronze sculpture of Sun Yat-sen.

Zhongshan has seen rapid construction and growth. The Zhongshan International Finance Center Towers reach 220 meters. The Perfect Eagle Golden Square tower will be even taller at 238 meters.

Zhongshan manages its township-level divisions through five district areas. The city government directly administers subdistricts and towns. While Han Chinese are the main ethnic group, many dialects thrive here. Cantonese is the most common language.

Agriculture plays a role with rice, lychee, and bananas. Xiaolan Town is famous for its chrysanthemums. Zhongshan, Dongguan, Nanhai, and Shunde were once known as the “Four Little Tigers” of Guangdong. Proximity to Hong Kong and Macau has boosted manufacturing. Specialized manufacturing towns produce specific products. These include furniture, appliances, and lighting fixtures.

Zhongshan encourages research and design. The Zhongshan National Torch High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was established in 1990. Zhongshan Port handles a high volume of containers.

Tourism thrives with hot spring resorts in Sanxiang Town. The Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Museum stands in Cuiheng. Xiaolan showcases houses adorned with chrysanthemum gardens. Zhongshan offers forest parks that protect the natural landscape.

Public buses serve the city. Ferries connect Zhongshan to Hong Kong. The Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway has seven stations here. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge will further improve connectivity. This dynamic city continues to evolve.
