“Poison warning over dead dogs” blared the headline. This tragedy struck at the Chui Yu Road Rest Garden in Tai Kok Tsui. Today we will explore this pet-friendly park. We will also remember a dark chapter in its history.
The Chui Yu Road Rest Garden opened in February 2021. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department created it for residents and pets. It is one of over 110 pet-friendly parks. It quickly became a popular spot. People enjoyed bringing their dogs to play.
Stanley brought his Shiba Inu, Mung Mung, to the Chui Yu Road Rest Garden’s dog garden in January. His friend, Ko, also brought his Border Collie, Matea. The dogs sniffed the grass and jumped into the bushes. They played happily for an hour.
Hours later both dogs became sick. Mung Mung showed signs of epilepsy. Her legs shook and her head cramped. Stanley tried to help her. He worried she would bite her tongue. Mung Mung tried to look at him when he called her “good girl”. She was unconscious when they reached the vet. The vet could not save her.
Then Ko reported that Matea had the same symptoms. She was put down. Ko felt like he had lost a daughter.
Stanley and Ko searched the Chui Yu Road Rest Garden for clues. They found chocolate and meat sticks. They suspected poison. They reported the case to the police. Sadly there were no surveillance cameras.
Vets suspected tetramine poisoning. Tetramine is a rat poison. It is highly toxic. Veterinarian Reanne Kwok said tetramine is banned worldwide. Someone obtained it illegally. The poison affects the central nervous system. It causes seizures, diarrhea, vomiting and breathing failure.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department collected samples. They are still waiting for the results.
Dog owners should stay alert at Chui Yu Road Rest Garden. This incident serves as a reminder. It highlights the danger of illegal poisons. Always watch your pets. Protect them from hidden threats.
Despite this sad event the Chui Yu Road Rest Garden remains open. It offers a space for community and recreation. Let us remember Mung Mung and Matea. Let us also work to prevent future tragedies. As you enjoy this park be vigilant. Report any suspicious items. Together we can keep our pets safe.
